Built by Spanish manufacturer Seat, the León is a small family car produced by the Volkswagen Group subsidiary SEAT, S.A. since October 1998.

When it was launched in 1998, the Seat León was the hatchback version of the Seat Toledo. The León is based on the Volkswagen Group A platform and shares several components with the Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Jetta, Audi TT, Audi A3 and Škoda Octavia.

The Seat León was the Spanish brand's first C-segment model as part of the VW Group and was marketered as a sportier and cheaper variant of the Golf. In order to have its sporty image enhanced, the car was given a more aggressive design.
