In 2012 Mercedes announced an upgrade to the G-Class namely a better interior, LED running lights and new mirrors. It will be offered as two AMG models G63 AMG and G65 AMG models in addition to the the G500 and G350 BlueTec.
All versions of the G-Class get LED running lights and larger side mirrors with integrated turn signals. The two AMG versions a different grill with double louvers, new bumpers with larger intakes, red brake calipers and 20in wheels.
The bigger changes come inside where the G-Class now has new controls and a TFT color screen in the instrument cluster. There is a new, larger panel in the center console for infotainment and navigation with voice-operated control and Bluetooth. Optionally buyers can opt for Distronic Plus, Blid Spot Assist, and Parktronic. The interior keeps the three switches for the differential locks with a slightly redesigned shift lever.
The new G-Class will be offered in two bodystyles. There will be the usual coupe, and a cabriolet will be available on only the G500.
There will be four available engines: one diesel and three petrol engines, two of which are from AMG. The G350 BlueTec uses a 3.0l V6 diesel with 211hp and 540Nm of torque. It produces 295g/km of CO2. The G500 has a 388hp, 5.5l V8 with 530Nm; it produces 348g/km of CO2. The G63 AMG has a biturbo, 5.5l V8 with stop/start that makes 544hp and 760Nm that produces 322Nm. Finally, the top of the line G65 AMG uses a 6.0l, biturbo V12 with 612hp and 1000Nm of torque.
The G350 BlueTec and G500 both use the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.
