Sebastian Vettel does not believe that the World Drivers' Championship is anywhere close to decided. This weekend will be Vettel's 100th Formula 1 grand prix, and he enters it in the WDC lead by 10 points.
"One hundred is a big number - 100 grands prix sounds a lot: 100 starts, 100 times surviving the first corner. If I reflect on it, it doesn't feel so long ago that I broke into Formula 1," said Vettel.
It has been a year where nearly anything could happen. For awhile, it appeared that Alonso had the championship easily in hand, but then Vettel erased his 46-point lead and turned it into a 10-point deficit.
Both men have had great seasons with ups and downs. Vettel has failed to finish in the points three times this season, and Alonso has been out of the points twice. Still, in a season without much outright dominance, Vettel has won four races in a row from Singapore to India.
"Of course the last races we had were very good for us, to put it mildly. They have helped us a lot," he said.
Now the season is coming to a close with just two races left.
"If you look at the races we've done so far I think Fernando's and my DNFs or calamities are equal. I still believe that the driver who deserves it most will be champion," said Vettel.
None of the drivers have experienced the Circuit of the Americas yet. It might be the opportunity for the better drive to show himself.
