Audi Brings A2 Electric Car Concept to Frankfurt

UPDATED: Images added of the Audi A2 Concept from the Frankfurt Motor Show, 13.09.2011

Audi just showed off some of its fastest models earlier this week when it revealed the newest versions of the S6, S7 and S8. Now it is showing the other side with a concept for an electric car concept called the A2.

Styling seems to be an evolution of the A1 except with a long style line that flows from the tops of he headlights all the way to the top of the tail lights unifying the entire design. Size is that of a standard city car at 3.8 meters long, 1.69m wide and 1.49m tall. The show car uses a dynamic glass roof that can go from dark opaque to transparent at the push of a button.

Audi is also experimenting with new ways to construct automotive lighting with the A2 Concept. It uses matrix beams, which means that groups of LEDs shine on microreflectors to create a bright, no-glare light. The car can sense the relative amount of daylight and adjusts the brightness of the tail lights accordingly. Similar to the headlights that BMW revealed yesterday, the rear fog light is laser-powered to be especially bright in inclement weather.

The interior of the concept emphasizes functionality. As opposed to buttons all of the controls are touch panels. The seats are positioned to allow for four passengers and for a bicycle with its front wheel removed to fit between the rear passengers.

The A2 Concept will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

What's up with all these laser powered headlights. Sounds like cars are becoming more like space ships.
