at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The two cars are closely related and use the same platform. The Rogue is offered in North America, and the X-Trail is for Europe.

The big changes to the X-Trail include an optional full-length panoramic sunroof, a third row of seats to seat seven and two- and four-wheel drive option.

The cars get a new, electronic four-wheel drive system that allows the driver to choose between two-wheel drive, Auto mode or permanent four-wheel drive with a rotary knob.

It has also added three new technological features - Active Ride Control, Active Engine Brake and Active Trace Control. The ride control examines road undulations and adapts the damping to compensate. The engine brake uses the transmission to add engine braking during deceleration for shorter braking distances. Trace control works with the all-wheel drive system to reduce understeer.

The X-Trail is meant to be more of a crossover than the previous generation. It has fewer hard, angular lines than the previous generation, and they have been replaced with a sleeker, more stylish design. The front has Nissan’s new V-shaped grill connected to new headlights with LED running lights but with higher wheel arches. The D-pillar points to the rear and flows into the boomerang-shaped headlights. The trim includes chrome and piano black plastic.

Because of the available third row of seats, the rear doors open to 80 degrees for easier entrance and exit.

Inside, the front seats have been resculpted to extra room in the middle row of seats, and the middle row slides forward and backward to allow for extra room for the folding third row of seats when necessary. There is a new storage box between the seats that it large enough to hold a 10in tablet.

The interior also gets the latest generation of NissanConncet infotainment with better smartphone connectivity and the ability to download apps to use with the car. It is displayed on a 7in touchscreen.

The top trim levels offer full LED headlights for the high and low beams.

The Rogue in the US

Nissan has not announced the engine range for the X-Trail, but it did announce the engine range and prices for the Rogue in the US.

The Rogue uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 170hp and 175lb-ft of torque. The front-wheel drive model will get 33mpg in the front-wheel drive model

It will go on sale in November at an opening price of $22,490 for the basic front-wheel drive Rogue. The top Rogue SL all-wheel drive model will start at $29,420.

Both cars share Nissan’s new Common Module Family platform, and the cars will eventually be on sale in 190 cars worldwide. It will be built at nine factories worldwide and sales will begin in the first quarter of 2014.
