Sportsvan at the Frankfurt Motor Show a concept but admits itself that it is very near production, and we will see a similar vehicle on sale in mid-2014. It concept echoes the look of the next generation Golf Plus.

The Sportsvan concept rides on the new VW MQB platform and is 134mm longer than the previous Golf Plus and 83mm longer than the seventh-generation Golf but is 224mm shorter than the Golf EstateGolf Variant Comfortline BlueTDI 1,6 TDI DSGVolkswagen Golf Variant C...Germany, 2013 > present. The wheelbase is 48mm longer than the current Golf.

Inside, the interior area of the Sportsvan is 80mm wider and 126mm higher than the Golf. The rear cargo space is variable as the rear seat has 180mm of forward and backward movement. With the seats fully rearward, cargo capacity is up 74 liters over the current Golf or 161 liters larger with the seats fully forward. Both the rear seats and front passenger seat fold down when necessary to add cargo capacity.

Volkswagen says that the production version will be offered with a wide range of engines from the 1.4 TSI, 2.0 TDI and 1.6 TDI engine families. The cleanest among them will be the BlueMotion version with a cleaner version of the 1.6 TDI with emissions around 95g/km of CO2. DSG transmissions will be available with all but the lowest power 1.4 TSI engine. Volkswagen says that its XDS+ electronic limited-slip differential will be standard on all versions.

The car is packed with electronic safety aids like Volkswagen’s PreCrash seat belt pre-tension system, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane assist, blind spot monitor and lighting assist.
