Confirmed: Rolls-Royce to debut electric 102EX Phantom in Geneva

The 81st Geneva Motor Show will see the debut of a one-off, fully electric powered Phantom. Rolls-Royce has already confirmed the development of the 102EX that will be tested during 2011 to gather data that will be of extreme importance for future decisions on the use of alternative drive-trains by the brand.

“We have engineered the world’s first battery electric vehicle for the ultra-luxury segment,” said CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös, speaking from the company’s headquarters in Goodwood. “With this vehicle, we begin an exploration into alternative drive-trains, seeking clarity on which alternative technologies may be suitable to drive Rolls-Royce motor cars of the future.”

Known for representing the highest standard in luxurious motoring, Rolls-Royce will be testing with its 102EX, also known as the Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), the opinions and reactions to alternative drive-train options of a range of stakeholders including owners, enthusiasts, members of the public and the media.

Rolls-Royce will give customers in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America the opportunity to test the 102EX. By giving them the opportunity to experience an alternative drive-train technology, the luxury brand will receive the feedback of their experiences, thoughts and concerns.

There are still no plans for the development of a production version, as a EX model the EV will have the goal of creating a dialogue between owners and stakeholders, as well as answering questions of its audience.

Questions and doubts will definitely include the car’s range between re-charges and the way it will handle in extreme weather conditions. The reliability and quality will also be at stake trying to reach customer expectations.

“I must be convinced that any alternative drive-train we choose for the future delivers an authentic Rolls-Royce experience,” added Müller-Ötvös. “It must be a technology that is right for our customers, our brand and which sets us on a sound footing for a sustainable future.”

Rolls-Royce has also launched a special website, in order to further debate the question of electric luxury. The site will also serve as a way to update the car’s progress while on tour.
