The car was not there in its entirety, but Subaru did choose to reveal the framework for its upcoming rear-wheel drive sports car at the Geneva Motor Show.Labelling it a technological display of the vehicles “architecture”, Subaru took the opportunity to preview what it sayswill become the world’s “only front-engine, rear-wheel drive mass-produced sports car powered by a horizontally-opposed engine.”

Developed in collaboration with Toyota, Subaru engineers say that the compact and lightweight body of the Boxer Sports Car – along with the 2.0 litre engines low centre of gravity – will take the driving experience to a new level.This will be achieved through the Boxer engines ability to be set back further towards the centre of the chassis, which results in a low-profile sports car silhouette and, in turn, a lower driving position.

As the four cylinder engine is also naturally aspirated, the Boxer Sports Car will not be a car that relies purely on power. Instead more focus has been shifted optimising the newly developed chassis which according to Subaru achieves “the fundamental characteristics of a rear-wheel drive sports car by delivering sporty performance as driver and vehicle work in unison, as well as providing agile response afforded by its short wheel base.”

Subaru has also incorporated its trademark suspension set-up for the Boxer Sports Car, which will feature struts at the front and double-wishbones at the rear.

The exact measurements of the Boxer Sports Car Architecture are 4200mm long, 1770mm wide and 1270mm tall. The wheelbase is 2570mm.

Production of the yet-to-be-properly-named Boxer Sports Car is expected to begin in the spring of 2012. More details, including what the vehicles exterior will look like, should be released later this year.
