Benefiting from the knowledge acquired with the development of the BMWi models, the X5 xDrive40e has a combined output of 313hp derived from the 245hp turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a synchronous electric motor with 113hp. Equipped with an automatic eight-speed transmission the hybrid vehicle has an average fuel consumption of 3.4 liters per 100km and a combined electric consumption of 15,4kWh/100km. CO2 emissions are indicated at 78g/km.
In terms of performance BMW states that the X5 xDrive40e can reach 100km/h in 6.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 210km/h in hybrid mode. In electric mode the maximum speed is limited to 120km/h.
The xDrive40e X5 may be driven in three different modes: Auto eDrive, where the electric motor supports the gasoline engine to maximize performance; Max eDrive exclusively driven with electricity with a range of 31km; and Save Battery that maintains the battery charge.
With the installation of the 9kWh lithium-ion battery BMW had to give up 150 liters of cargo capacity compared to the rest of the X5 range. The vehicle still maintains 500 liters of capacity.
