, and it is over a year from being debuted. While insiders say that Toyota has not decided on exterior styling yet, engineering is well underway.
According to a Toyota engineer, the next generation Prius will be all-wheel drive and offer 75mpg (3.1l/100km) fuel economy. Emissions could be as low as 70g/km of CO2.
“The current 1.8-litre engine will be modified, while the inverter and motor will be downsized, but will deliver more power.
“The rear wheels will be driven by a motor in an e-4WD system,” said the engineer who did not want to be named.
The new platform is also slated to be about 154lbs (70kg) lighter than the existing car.
On top of the improvements, Toyota will also offer a plug-in version that will get even better economy.
In regards to styling, Toyota has not decided whether to make the next generation car evolutionary or revolutionary.
