Bluemotion concept will show North America the efficiency offered by modern diesel engines at the North American International Auto Show.

The concept takes a current Passat and installs VW’s 1.4-liter four-cylinder from the EA211 engine family and a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The new engine produces 150hp and 184lb-ft and includes cylinder deactivation that turns off two cylinders while using little throttle to deliver 42mpg fuel economy. It also has a start/stop system to turn the engine off when a car comes to a stop. The transmission is modified with a coasting function that decouples the engine and transmission when drivers take their release the accelerator.

The concept is not much more than an opportunity to show off a new drivetrain. The exterior has been painted Reef Blue Metallic, which is a new color for the Passat for 2014, and the interior has two-tone blue seats.

While all of the technology already exists, Volkswagen has made no indication that the EA211 diesel engines will come to North America.
