The CrossBlue Concept was introduced at NAIAS in Detroit in 2013. It is a future seven-seater SUV model launched by VW intended especially for the U.S. market.
The prototype will reach the market in 2015 and is part of VW's strategy to increase sales in the United States and Canada.
The CrossBlue prototype was developed in Germany under the leadership of Walter da Silva, Chief Designer of the Volkswagen Group, and Klaus Bischoff, head of designer at Volkswagen, in cooperation with Volkswagen of America. If this new model enters production, it will be placed above the Tiguan and below Touareg in the range of the German brand.
The CrossBlue is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system that combines a diesel TDI engine with two electric motors, a DSG transmission and a full electric drivetrain. According to Volkswagen the prototype shows an average consumption of 2.1 l/100km.
Despite the low average consumption, the CrossBlue also stands out in terms of performance. Thanks to the TDI engine with 305hp and 700nm, the prototype reaches the 92km/h in seven seconds and reaches a top speed of 204km/h or 120km/h in electric mode. As for autonomy, in pure electric mode, the CrossBlue can cover 33km with zero emissions. In hybrid mode the autonomy extends to 1063km.
In terms of space, the CrossBlue prototype seats six passengers but the production model is designed to carry up to seven passengers, with the possibility of the second row seating three instead of two.
