The compact Golf was launched by Volkswagen in 1974 and has been ever since the most successful Volkswagen model so far, even overcoming the mythic Beetle as well as replacing it in the market right in the 70’s. This car’s name was intentionally chosen so it would, in fact, bring sports to people’s minds. It has been the top selling VW model, with over 21 million build and sold, having saved the company by the time Beetle’s sales were falling dramatically.
The main reason for Golf’s immediate success was its technology, which was different from all the previous models by having front-mounted water-cooled engines and front wheel drive, as people were no longer intending to buy VW models that had the opposite characteristics.
Golf’s designer is Italian car-architect Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Overall, the Golf has now filled up 5 generations. With the first generation’s launch, it wouldn’t be long until the first Golf GTI, Golf’s sports version, came out. The second generation was launched in the 1980’s, adding the Bosch K-Jetronic electronic injection to the car.
Third generation of the Golf was launched on the market in 1991, and afterward the fourth would come out in 1998. Currently and since 2003, it’s the fifth generation Golf that has been produced and sold, after a few more adjustments, like the FCI (Fuel Stratified Injection). Since 2008, the latest generation of the Golf is marketed by the German manufacturer.

This model was placed on the United States and Canada markets under the name Rabbit, rather than Golf, and as Caribe in Mexico. Plus, CitiGolf is the South African’s Golf version.

The Golf would be the “father” of the Jetta, which is barely nothing more than a Golf version with the same technology but three distinct areas: front, interior and back.
The first Volkswagen diesel engine came with the first generation of the Golf, in 1976, having been known as vigorous and economic.

Over the years, VW Golf has been made in several different versions: three and five-door hatchbacks, sedan, convertible and station wagon.
It has been nominated quite a few times for Car of the Year, winning in 1992.
