The engine runs on both gasoline and hydrogen or a blend of both. In hydrogen mode, it will emit no CO2, and the only thing that will go out of the rear is water. To make this work, the car has a special fuel management system that can change the combustion process based on the situation and fuel. The hydrogen is stored in four carbon fiber tanks that each hold 3.5kg. Aston Martin is not saying how much range, the Rapide S will have in hydrogen mode but clearly the team is not relying on it completely.
“Aston Martin has a strong track record of innovation and, with our superb history of competition and testing at the Nürburgring, it is only right that we showcase this amazing new technology at this year’s 24-hour race," said Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours will be held on May 19-20 and will have 150 cars lined up to start the race.
