convertible is going to get a different name when it is released in 2014 - the 2-Series. The 1-Series coupe will also carry the 2-Series moniker.

Mechanically, the 2-Series will be basically identical to the current 1-Series. The two cars will use the same platform, engine and transmissions.

When the 2-Series launches, it will likely use several tunes of BMW's 2.0l turbo engine with 150hp, 177hp and 218hp. There will also be a diesel version with a 214hp, 2.0l diesel. Like the current 1-Series, the 2-Series will be available with either a six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic. Like the 1-Series, it might also be available with the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

BMW is slowly changing to a name series of odd numbers for sedans and even numbers for coupes and convertibles. The current 5-Series5 Series Gen.6 [F10]BMW 5 Series Gen.6 [F10]Germany, 2010 > 2016180 versions
