Even through the company's bad designs or poor reliability, BMW's ability to create fantastic engines has never faltered. The ActiveHybrid 5-series brings a hybrid powertrain to the 3.0 liter turbocharged, inline 6 adding 55hp.
The hybrid 5-series produces 340hp, 149g/km of CO2 and uses between 6.4 liters and 7.0 liters per 100km of petrol. The technology allows the car to travel at up to 60km/h in pure electric mode for four kilometers. It can also accelerate to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds.
The car is not just about speed, it also brings efficiency to the 5-series. It has start/stop technology, and it uses 1.6l fewer liters of petrol, which is a double-digit increase in efficiency. The engine can decouple from transmission in Eco mode to coast the car at less than 160km/h that also recharges the battery. The car can also recharge the battery when decelerating and braking.
The exterior of the hybrid 5-series get a few upgrades like a galvanized kidney grill, chrome exhaust outlets and ActiveHybrid badging. The interior is identical to a standard 5-series, except for 145 liters fewer for storage in the luggage compartment because the battery is stored between the rear seats and luggage compartment.
BMW has not announced a price for the hybrid 5-series, but it will be available next year.
