UPDATE: Images added of the 1-Series debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, 13.09.2011

BMW has released details and pictures of its upcoming second generation 1 Series range of premium hatchbacks. The overhauled line-up will feature adjusted proportions and a more powerful and fuel efficient batch of engines to choose from.

The new 1 Series is to remain exclusively rear-wheel-drive with all engine options now featuring four-cylinders and turbocharging thanks to BMW’s TwinPower turbo technology. Two 1.6 litre petrol engines will be available featuring 100 kW and 125 kW, with the more powerful achieving 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds with a combined cycle fuel consumption of between 5.8 – 5.9 litres/100km. For the diesels there will be a choice of three 2.0 litre engines with 85 kW, 105 kW and 135 kW. The more powerful 102d will reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 7.2 seconds will keeping fuel consumption to between 4.5 – 4.6 litres/100km. A 116d EfficientDynamics Edition is also planned which is said to keep CO2 emissions to 99 g/km.

The new 1 Series will also be the first vehicle in its class to have an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Both automatic and manual models will also feature start/stop functionality and an ECO PRO mode

Updates to the exterior include an extra 85mm of body length, 30mm of wheelbase length and 17mm of width for increased interior room and ‘sportier’ look. 21mm of legroom has been added and the luggage compartment capacity has increased from 330 to 360 litres.

The new 1 Series will also be available in two trim levels; Sport and Urban. Both will feature an array of optional safety and convenience services such as the iDrive system, High-beam assistance, Adaptive Headlights, parking assistance, reversing camera, Lane Departure Warning, internet connectivity and Facebook and Twitter apps.

Although pricing has not been revealed as of yet, expect more details to emerge during the lead up to the new 1 Series official debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

it's a facelift, new face, same body. Anyway, at least it isn't boring, kudos to the (slight) braviness

8 speed gearbox will be interesting in this size of car. Won't win any beauty contests but then SE's never do.
