from last year for the new Concept Active Tourer OutdoorConcept Active Tourer OutdoorBMW Concept Active Tourer...Germany, 2012 > 2012 that will be on display at the OutDoor fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany. While BMW has not said as much officially, the Concept Active Tourer is meant as a way for BMW to get buyers used to the idea of a front-wheel drive car from them with a new look.

The new Outdoor version is aimed at people looking for a small car with lots of space while remaining environmentally friendly.

The design of the Outdoor concept remains basically the same from the previously shown version. It is now painted in Gold Race Orange and rides on 20in wheels.

The engine is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder mounted transversely at the front and powering the front wheels. It also has a plug-in hybrid for further efficiency and range. BMW claims that the powertrain would supply a total power output of 188hp and have 2.5l/100km (94mpg US or 113mpg UK) fuel economy and 60g/km of CO2 emissions. It would offer 20-30km of pure electric range (12-19 miles). That is enough to get it to 100km/h in less than eight seconds and have a top speed of 200km/h.

The actual vehicle is 4.35m long and 1.833m wide with a 2.67m long wheelbase. The move to front wheel drive increases interior space over a traditional BMW and allows for a lower load floor

The interior has been reworked to be friendlier to the outdoor user. The seats sit high for better visibility, and the leather is hardwearing and easy to clean. The floor of the cargo area is made from studded plastic.

The interior includes an internal carrier for two bicycles. When not in use, the carrier folds into the cargo area floor.

BMW has not said when its first front-wheel drive models will go on sale, but it will likely be before the end of next year.
