F1 boss Stefano Domenicali, the team has finalized a new contract with Felipe Massa, and he will sign it sometime in the coming weeks.

"When you get the OK from both directions that is when you are sure. I think it will be pretty soon to be honest," said Massa.

Calling Massa's performance this season mixed would be an understatement. He had just four top-ten finishes in the first ten races, but he has not been out of the top ten in the last six races. All of his top-five finishes have come in the last portion of the season, and he scored his only podium at the Japanese Grand Prix.

During most of the season, there have been a revolving door of speculated drivers who might take Massa's place at Ferrari. The team reportedly courted Mark Webber for the seat, and Sergio Perez was another rumored driver for the team.

Domenicali offered the following explanation for why Ferrari would want Massa back: "I think that for sure he understands now better the car, he understands better the tires – and also the fact Felipe is a very, very strong driver because otherwise we would have already taken a different decision.

"So I feel that now when Felipe has under his control the understanding of the tires and car, he performs at the level he should."

There are no details yet in regards to the length of Massa's new contract or his payment.
