Ferrari's pole drought ends with Alonso in Monza

Fernando Alonso secured the pole position in Monza. The Spaniard was the quickest after the third qualifying clinching his first pole in Ferrari and the first pole for Ferrari in Monza since 2004. Alonso also ended a two-year drought of pole positions of the Scuderia. Jenson Button will start alongside the Ferrari driver on the first lane. Felipe Massa was the third quickest in qualifying.

From the start of the qualifying session it was imediatly clear that the fight for the first place in the gridline would be between Ferrari and McLaren. The drivers of both teams constantly switched first place between them, showing that their cars were best suited in the fast Italian track.

Alonso's fastest lap was achieved in the beginning of Q3 and soon it was clear that it wouldn't be beaten until the end of the session.Until the end of the session there were many attempts from the closest contenders to beat Alonso's time with the closest effort coming from Jenson Button who secured second place. Ferrari's Felipe Massa confirmed the good performance of the Scuderia on home soil.

Although Red Bull had the worst qualifying of the season, with no driver on the front lane, Webber still managed to come fourth, ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton that wasn't able to produce a good effort on Q3. Sebastian Vettel was sixth.

Nico Rosberg was seventh in qualifying, as his team-mate Schumacher had yet another poor performance starting tomorrow's race in 12th position. Williams got both cars into Q3, with Nico Hulkenberg taking eighth and Rubens Barrichello 10th, splitted by Renault's Robert Kubica.

After a fantastic 2009 performance in Monza, Force India was expecting a better result in the Italian circuit. The Indian team was the biggest disappointment with Liuzzi failing to make the cut on Q1 and Sutil loosing a place in Q3 by just 0.057 seconds. They will depart from 20th and 11th place respectively.
