Ferrari Says Mechanical Break Caused DRS Failure

has diagnosed what caused Fernando Alonso's car's Drag Reduction System to fail in the opening laps of the Bahrain Grand Prix. It says that a mechanical component in the DRS broke. It was the first time that the engineers have seen a failure in the system in three years of working with DRS. 

“It’s hard to recall a race where so many things went wrong. The DRS failure prevented Fernando, who yet again produced a great performance, from fighting Vettel for the win. Then for Felipe, there were the two tire related problems that pushed him out of the points and prevented from getting the top five finish that was within his grasp," said Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali.

The team is putting complete responsibility of the fault on itself. Even though the fault had never happened before, it should have been checked. It believes that if the system had not failed, Alonso would have been challenging Sebastian Vettel for the lead. 

Like most of the F1 field, Ferrari has upgrades planned for the Spanish Grand Prix on May 12. It is also trying to improve understanding of the tires to avoid problems like those that affected Massa. 

"We believe in our ability to be in the fight for the titles right to the end and this time, we have been in that fight since the start, which has not been the case for a while. At the same time, we must be aware that in order to achieve our objectives, we have to be perfect in every area," said Domenicali.
