The 500e will only be sold in California

It is not very often that automakers comment on a rival's design whether positive or negative, but NissanNissanNissanJapan, 1932 > present159 models

are in a war of words over their styling. Both allege that the other's designs are nothing but "visual pollution."

The argument started when Matt Davis, head of Fiat marketing, referred to the Nissan LeafLEAFNissan LEAFJapan, 2009 > present29 versions

at the LA Auto Show.

"Let's be honest, ugliness is probably one of the worst forms of pollution. The Fiat 500e proves that you do not have to give up on good looks to deliver an electric car," said Davis in an interview with Bloomberg.

Nissan head of marketing Simon Sproule responded by telling Automotive News Europe: "Let's face it, Fiat has not shied away from controversial styling themselves. Many would describe many of their products as visual pollution. Take a long, hard look at the Fiat DobloDoblò Gen.2Fiat Doblò Gen.2Italy, 2010 > present86 versions

According to Sproule, Fiat is building the 500e simply to meet California emissions standards, and the Leaf is a real choice for families looking for a practical vehicle.

"They chose the smallest vehicle in their range with the least amount of passenger functionality. I don't think they have the credibility or the hardware to stand behind these kind of statements. Either you're committed to it or not," said Sproule.

Nissan has sold 8,330 Leafs in the US so far this year, down 5% over last year. Although, November sales were up 129% to 1,539 cars, compared to 672 cars in November last year.

The 500e is not on sale yet, but sales will likely be lower because it will only be available in California. The Leaf is available nationwide.
