has announced that the first 1,000 next generation Mustangs will be sold as 2014.5 special edition models to celebrate the car's 50th birthday.

was not ready in time. American cars would be released in the late summer or early fall bearing the next model year. So a 1964 model year car would have actually gone on sale in the third quarter of 1963. The Mustang went on sale on April 17, 1964, and were given the name "1964-and-a-half" models. In August 1964, Ford introduced the 1965 Mustang with a new, larger V8 engine option, an alternator to replace the early cars' generator, the GT trim and fastback body style, as the earliest cars could only be bought as a coupe or convertible.

The Mustang was a sales success from the moment it was released, but buyers who waited until August for the proper 1965 car honestly got a better vehicle.

The next generation Mustang will get a brand new platform and all of the special edition cars will come with a 5.0-liter V8 with 444hp. Later, it will release the standard edition of the new Mustang, which will reportedly be offered with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine option.

Ford has not given a release date for the 2014.5 special edition, but if it was smart, it would release them as close to April 14, 2014, as possible, which happens to be a Monday. It is the perfect day to start selling them.
