Ford Begins Production of 1.0L Ecoboost in Cologne

Ford has begun production of its new three-cylinder, one liter Ecoboost engine at its factory in Cologne, Germany. Ford's tiniest petrol engine will on sale in early 2012 in Europe, and Ford says it will later launch the engine worldwide.

The first version of the 1.0l Ecoboost will produce 125PS, 170Nm of torque and 114g/km of CO2 and be introduced in the Focus. Ford says that the engine will use 5.0l/100km of petrol. Soon after, Ford will launch a 100PS version that makes 109g/km of CO2.

After rolling the new engine out in the Focus, Ford will put it into the C-Max and B-Max.

Ford fitted over 100 new machines and a 580 meter assembly line to the factory in Cologne to build the new Ecoboost engine. The new assembly process uses 5ml of cooling liquid compared to two liters of the previous version. This represents a 99% decrease in the waste water created.

“Ford's commitment to Germany as a high-tech manufacturing location is significant. Nowhere outside of the U.S. do we have a stronger design engineering and manufacturing presence than we do here in Germany," said Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally.

I am reading a car book from the early 70's. Would have been a dream for them back then to have a 1 liter engine developing 125HP... This is impressive.
