are working together to create a standardized, single-port DC charging technology that it calls the Combined Charging System. The corporations say that the system will charge current electric vehicles within 15-20 minutes. The system will be revealed at the Electric Vehicle Symposium from May 6-9.

The charging stations incorporate a one-phase AC charger, three-phase AC charger, DC home charging station and ultra-fast DC charger. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has chosen the system as its standard in a paper that will be published later in the summer. The ACEA, which is the European equivalent  to the SAE, has also selected the system at its standard AC/DC charging interface for electric vehicles in 2017.

The standard was chosen based on preferences of US and European consumers, ergonomics and the analysis of charging strategies. It creates an international standard for charge controllers, dimensions and safety.

The first Combined Charging System will be available later this year, and all of the participating automakers are developing vehicles to use the system.
