. The goal is for them to emit 95g/km of CO2, which is 45g/km of CO2 cleaner than the current four cylinders from Mercedes. 

“We won’t have a three-cylinder engine. Our four-cylinder will be as good as BMW’s three-cylinder,” said Jurgen Doring, Mercedes' head of powertrain strategy. 

The new engine family is set to be introduced in 2014.

For future large sedans, Mercedes plans to embrace hybrid powertrains and lighter components.

Mercedes has instituted a rule where every new automotive module must be at least 14% lighter than the module it replaces
