General Motors has announced that it will invest 890 million dollars on the production of a new generation of fuel efficient small block truck and car engines. The investment will create or secure 1,600 jobs in five North American plants.
The plants in Tonawanda, New York, and St Catherines, Ontario (Canada) will receive investments of 400 million and 235 million dollars, respectively, in order to support the engine production. To support the engine casting and component production the plants in Defiance (Ohio), Bedford (Indiana) and Bay City (Michigan) will receive a total of 258 million dollars.
The money invested will be used to renovate the facilities and to install new, highly flexible engine machining and assembly equipment and special tooling designed for manufacturing efficiency and engine quality.
“GM is investing in our plants, restoring and creating jobs and making progress toward our vision of designing, building and selling the world’s best vehicles,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “These latest investments show our commitment to improving fuel economy for buyers of every GM car, truck and crossover and giving them the best possible driving and ownership experience.”
According to GM, the next generation small block engine family is set to have unprecedented fuel efficiency thanks to direct injection and an all-new advanced combustion system design.
