are reuniting one of the most successful partnerships in Formula 1 history with the announcement that Honda is building a 1.6-liter turbo V6 with KERS for McLaren that will enter competition in 2015. Honda says that development for the new engine has already begun at its technical center in Tochigi, Japan. It will mark Honda's return to the F1 grid since leaving in 2008.

"We’re proud and thrilled to be joining forces once more to take on the world in Formula 1. Whilst both companies are fully aware that we’re embarking on a very demanding journey together, we’re hugely committed to the success of the partnership, and we'll spend the next 18 months working together to ensure that we’re fully established and competitive ahead of our first grand prix together in 2015," said McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh.

Honda has not confirmed yet whether any other teams will use its engines.

"The new F1 regulations with their significant environmental focus will inspire even greater development of our own advanced technologies and this is central to our participation in F1," said Honda President Takanobu Ito.

McLaren says that for the 2014 season it will still use Mercedes engines.

Honda became a F1 engine supplier in 1983 and won 71 races by the time it left the sport in 1992. From 1988 to 1992, it supplied engines to McLaren to win four consecutive world championships with the team and win 44 races. It was most dominant in 1988 when won 15 of the 16 races that season.
