Renault-Nissan is counting on global growth and wants Infiniti to be its luxury brand. It wants to sell 500,000 Infiniti vehicles annually worldwide by 2017. That would give it 10% of the global luxury car market share.
By opening the Infiniti headquarters in Hong Kong, it is trying to make Infiniti in China the equivalent of Lexus in the US. The brand did not exist there 20 years ago but now challenges for the top luxury brand in the country. Infiniti will be headquartered in China but the engineering will still take place in Japan, at least for now.
Infiniti sold 19,000 cars in China last year, which was a 40% increase compared to the year before. The US is still the brand's major sales region, but China is growing. Dealers in China will grow from 25 to 100 this year.
"Establishing our headquarters in Hong Kong, the gateway to China, is an acknowledgment of the center of gravity in luxury vehicle sales," said Andy Palmer, the Nissan executive in charge of Infiniti.
To keep costs down and availability up, Infiniti will begin building a stretched MInfiniti M Gen.3Japan, 2010 > present22 versions
