John Lennon's First Car, a Ferrari 330GT, Sells for $540,000 at Auction

, sold for £359,900 (€416,213 or $541,577) at Bonham's auction during the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Bonham's estimated that the car would sell for between £180,000 and £220,000 ($277,000 and $340,000). Only about 500 330GT 2+2s were made, and the sale included restoration documents and proof that it was Lennon's car. 

Lennon was 25 by the time he got his driver's license in 1965, already married and a father. The Beatles had just released "Ticket to Ride," its ninth #1 hit on the music charts in the US. 

Local luxury auto dealers crammed outside of Lennon's house in hopes that he would chose one of their cars. He could have chosen anything, but he bought a right-hand driver Ferrari 330GT 2+2 in Azzuro Blue with a blue interior, which is quite possibly the best first car ever. He paid £6,500, over £100,000 in today's money and kept the car until October 1967 to cover over 20,000 miles.

The Bonham's auction also included the sale of Juan Manuel Fangio's race-winning 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196RMercedes-Benz W196 Motort...Germany, 1954 > 195515 photos
for an auction record $29.6 million.
