has become the first F1 team to begin offsetting its team’s carbon emissions and have net negative CO2 emissions. It was already the first carbon-neutral team in F1.

With its partner CNI UK, McLaren is buying carbon credits from wind farms in India, China and Mexico to offset its own emissions. The team’s latest investment is a 102 Megawatt wind farm in Oaxaca, Mexico, that will save an estimated 719,925 metric tons of CO2 a year. The power plant is also reforesting 152.8 hectares (0.589 square miles) to offset its own carbon emissions in building and installing the turbines.

“We will always emit some carbon we took the bold step to mitigate that effect by investing in credible and responsible environmental projects, which deliver significant carbon savings alongside positive social impacts,” said team principal Martin Whitmarsh. “The Oaxaca project is one such scheme and we are pleased that, with the expert support of CNI UK, we have been able to identify it.”

McLaren has a plan in place to reduce its CO2 emissions by 2.5% a year and send no waste to landfills by 2015.
