Mercedes has reached a milestone by selling 2 million SUVs worldwide since it introduced the G-Class over 30 years ago. Mercedes' SUV sales were up 24.3% worldwide this year selling 221,518 SUVs this year. SUVs now account for one in five of Mercedes' sales.
“Our entire SUV family is extremely popular among our customers, particularly in the USA and in its second-largest market China. The SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz’s growth and have achieved a new sales record in every month since July 2010,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The big sellers among Mercedes SUVs are the M-class and GLK. The GLK has been among Mercedes' best selling SUVs for the entire year, and it will soon start to be manufactured in China specifically for the Chinese market. The M-Class has also seen sales growth and received an environmental certificate from the German TUV for its low emissions. It was also awarded as the best vehicle in its class for occupant protection by Euro NCAP. The M-class also received the Golden Steering Wheel 2011 as voted on by readers of Germany's Bild am Sonntag and Auto Bild magazines.
