It seems as though the F125 concept shown at last month's Frankfurt Motor Show might be more than just a concept or at least its powerplant is.
Mercedes has to hit future emissions and fuel economy limits set by the US and European environmental agencies. By 2025, cars in Europe will have to produce less than 95g/km of CO2. The cleanest current S-class produces 149g/km of CO2. That means if Mercedes wants to continue making big, luxurious cars, it will have to find some way making them cleaner. Its plan is to develop hybrid and full electric drivetrains that would be cleaner without sacrificing power.
The F125 concept for all of its weird gullwing sedan styling uses a hydrogen fuel cell. If the hydrogen infrastructure is not ready by 2025, then Mercedes also has plans to have electric cars ready that have a range of 1000km.
In an interview with Left Lane News, Mercedes Benz R&D Head Thomas Weber said, “If zero emission mobility will be necessary, and that’s what we believe, it’s clear we have to change to electric mobility.”
