Mercedes revealed the E300 Bluetec Hybrid around the time of the North American International Auto Show in January. The car is one of the first to be a hybrid diesel that leads to low emissions and theoretically high torque. Mercedes will have the hybrid E-Class on sale only in Europe in the third quarter of 2012 as a saloon and estate.
The E300 Bluetec Hybrid is rated at 204hp from a 2.2l diesel four-cylinder and a seven-speed automatic transmission that uses 4.2l/100km of diesel (48mpg) and produces 109g/km of CO2. The electric motor is rated at 15kW (20hp). The entire hybrid system with electric motor, transmission and lithium-ion batteries weighs about 100kg.
After the release of the E300 Bluetec Hybrid, the E400 Hybrid with a petrol V6 will go on sale in the US and Japan.
"With a clear focus on the varying needs of the worldwide markets, we are able to offer precisely the models that our customers require," said Dr. Thomas Weber, head of Mercedes-Benz cars development.
