Mercedes bet on a concept with futuristic lines as a surprise at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. The
IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) presents the latest developments in terms of aerodynamics and also a new design language that will inspire future models of the brand.
In addition to using a plug-in hybrid efficient powertrain, the vehicle also has a new interior with touch controls which should be featured in the brand's model range in the coming years. The IAA is a four-door sedan with an extendable bodywork, which allows the concept to reach a drag coefficient of 0.19. The dimensions and also the silhouette are a preview of the third-generation
CLS set to be launched in 2017.
From the 80km/h onwards a section of the rear of the IAA extends and increases the concept's length by 390mm, making it more aerodynamic. Furthermore flaps on the front bumpers and the grille louvres are activated to improve air flow around the wheel arches and underneath the car.
The IAA concept is equipped with the same plug-in hybrid powertrain of the current C350e with a total output of 279hp, which allows the vehicle to reach 250 km/h. Mercedes did not disclose performance data on the IAA.
