Volkswagen first showed the Cross Coupe Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show in late 2011. Now the car will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show using different engines and with a new two-tone paint job.
The Cross Coupe that will be shown in Geneva will be powered by three powerplants like the one shown in Tokyo, but in place of the original concept's TSI petrol engine, the car to be shown in Switzerland will use a TDI diesel. The total power for all of the engines working together is 225kW (306ps). The Cross Coupe uses a conventional hybrid powertrain in the front with the TDI linked to an electric motor. However, when the car is running in all-wheel drive mode or in pure electric mode, the car has a third electric motor located in the rear axle with 85kW and 270Nm of torque powers the rear wheels. The batteries for both motors are located in the center tunnel in place of a conventional driveshaft.
Volkswagen rates the concept's fuel economy at 1.8l/100km and 46g/km of CO2, which is an improvement compared to Tokyo car that was rated at 2.7l/100km. Volkswagen says the range of the Cross Coupe on pure electric power is 45km. The batteries can be charged by plugging them into a power source and through regenerative braking.
The Cross Coupe is a concept for now. While the styling seems feasible for production, the trio of engines would be very expensive to implement with current technology.
The red and silver car in the gallery is the Geneva Motor Show version, while the all silver car is the Tokyo Motor Show version.
