Dreamworks Pictures has announced that it has acquired the rights to the Need for Speed videogame, and it is fast-tracking the production of a film based on the games for a 2014 release.
The script has been written by George Gatins from an original concept by him and his brother John Gatins. George has no writing credits to his name and has produced two feature films: She's Out of My League and You Stupid Man. However, his brother, John, is an accomplished writer in Hollywood having written six feature films, the most recently being Real Steel. Need for Speed will be directed by Scott Waugh who is a stunt man turned directed who most recently directed the film Act of Valor.
According to Dreamworks, the film takes the games as inspiration but is not based on any specific game in the Need for Speed series.
Electronic Arts, the games' publisher, and Dreamworks are taking suggestions on what cars should be included on the Need for Speed Facebook page.
The original Need for Speed game was released on the Panasonic 3DO in December 1994, but the game really came into its own in Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit in 1998 on the Playstation and PC that had the player running from the police in supercars of the era.
Below is a video of the original game in action.
