New C-Class Coupé: new compact, classic coupe to debut in Geneva

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the first pictures and information about the C-Class Coupé, its newest model that is set to be presented at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. This will be the first time in 125 years of history that the brand will be offering a compact, classic coupé.

Entering a new car segment, the new model makes use of the technology featured on the recently launched new generation of the C-Class, combining the coupe format with fun driving and efficiency.

"By extending the C-Class portfolio, we are consciously targeting new customers," says Dr Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The new model is youthful, stylish and dynamic. What we are offering is an exceptionally sporty way to enter the world of the Mercedes-Benz coupé."

In terms of design the new C-Class has some of the typical coupe features, including the short front overhang, long bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and long, stretched out roof. The new coupe keeps some cues from the new C-Class, for example the wedge-shaped, sloping beltline, while the strong C-pillar is an entirely distinctive element. Its position gives the C-Class Coupé a sportier look.

Sharing the same front styling as the latest C-Class, the coupe version still has its own singular touch. With the front being dominated by the radiator grille, the centre air intake opens upwards, forming a visual base unit for the radiator grille which has the double-louvre style typical of a coupé.

When the C-Class Coupé arrives to the market in June, customers will be able to choose from a lineup of three petrol engines and two diesel powerplants. All of them will feature direct injection and the ECO start/stop function as standard and be classed as BlueEFFICIENCY units. The C 250 and C 350 feature the further-enhanced 7G‑TRONIC PLUS seven-speed automatic transmission as standard, while C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI diesel variants and the basic C 180 petrol engine come with a six-speed manual transmission.

The top of the range version, C 350 BlueEFFICIENCY, is powered by the V6 petrol engine, which features BlueDIRECT method of injection. It produces a maximum power output of 306 hp and 370 Nm and delivers an average fuel consumption of 6.8 litres per 100km.

The title of most economic coupe model is handed to the 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with manual six-speed transmission and the standard ECO start/stop function. With 4,4 litres per 100km of average fuel consumption, this version emits 117 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Finally the C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY produces emissions of 128 g/km as a result of the combined diesel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100km.
