. Nissan is aiming to control 10% of the Russian car market by 2016, compared to 5.9% today. That would involve it tripling annual sales from present to around 483,000 cars a year. Also by 2016, Nissan expects that 80% of cars sold in Russia will be manufactured there.
To meet this goal, Nissan's St. Petersburg factory will add a third shift to double production to 100,000 cars a year. Nissan is also investing €167m in the St. Petersburg plant to add 50,000m² of production area. Nissan will use the AvtoVAZ factory in Togliatti that it will aquire in the takeover to build Datsuns in Russia. It estimates that Datsun will make up a third of Russian sales.
"Russia is Nissan's largest European market and is going to grow significantly in both size and importance over the mid-term, and could account for around a third of our overall European sales by 2016," said Colin Dodge, Nissan Vice President.
