in Japan with 80kg (176lbs) less weight and a new total range of 228km (142 miles), 6km (4 miles) better than the previous version. At least in Japan, Nissan is also adding a new, entry-level S trim. All new Leafs will also get improved regenerative braking and a new power-saving heating system.
All of the mechanical changes will come to European and North American Leafs later, but they are available in Japan now.
Nissan has integrated the electric motor, inverter and DC/DC converter to decrease their size by 30% and decrease weight by 10%. It also claims the new motor gives better acceleration. The weight is also 80kg less by using lighter parts and integrating parts together. Luggage space has been increased from 330l to 370l by moving the onboard charger.
The lower weight also meant reworking the steering and suspension setup. Nissan says that the steering response has been improved.
Nissan has also added a long-life mode to the battery that charges it to 80% to extend battery life, and the charging port now has an LED light for seeing the plug at night.
Now, the remaining battery capacity will be shown on a percentage on the multifunction display, and the parking brake is now foot operated. The display also shows the battery capacity at GPS' destination.
All trims also get a heat pump cabin heater, heated seats, heated steering wheel and heated ceiling. Nissan believes that this heats the car more efficiently than a conventional blower setup.
The upgraded Leaf gets 17in, aluminum wheels on the top line G model and 16in steel wheels on the S and X trims. LED headlights and fog lights come standard on the G trim and is optional on the S and X trims. Leather seats are optional on the G and X trims. A seven-speaker Bose stereo and Around View Monitor are optional on the G and X trims. The improved braking regeneration system is less noisy and comes standard on the G and X trims.
Nissan has sold 43,000 Leafs worldwide since it went on sale in December 2010. Nissan is also building 700 new quick chargers in Japan to add to the 400 it already has there.
