Motorsport, Haug oversaw Mercedes re-enter Formula 1 as an engine manufactuer and then oversaw the team when it returned as a full manufacturer. He also led Mercedes while it dominated the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) in the 90s.
"I would like to thank the best car company in the world for more than 22 years, which never had a single moment without passion for me. I particularly wish to thank the board for the trust and freedom they have always given me with all my activities," said Haug.
Haug became Vice President of Motorsport at Mercedes in 1990 and before that was an auto racer and automotive journalist. In the 1980s he served at Editor-in-Chief of German auto magazines Auto, Motor und Sport and Sport Auto.
Haug oversaw his teams to 439 wins in sports car racing, touring car racing and Formula 1 from 986 races, which gives him a win percentage of 45%. His Mercedes-powered cars won 87 grand prixs and six world titiles.
Other highlights of Haug's career at Mercedes include supplying the winning engine for the 1994 Indianapolis 500. He managed the Mercedes DTM team as it won 19 DTM titiles and 10 constructors' championships, and two championships in the DTM-successor series, the ITC. Mercedes also won every race in the 1998 FIA GT Championship.
Mercedes has not said who will replace Haug, and Haug has not said what he will do now.
