Opel will reveal at the Geneva Motor Show in March, a sports car concept that goes by the name of
GT Concept and embodies a new development in the strategy of design of the German brand, centering the car on the emotional level. The concept is a direct heir to the
Opel GT and the recently unveiled
Monza Concept, and features the engine placed in the front-center position and rear wheel drive.
With a more futuristic and minimalist design, Opel chose to remove the door handles, exterior mirrors and windscreen windshield wiper blades.
The Opel GT Concept is the heir of the famous genes of the
Opel Experimental GT, a coupe introduced in 1965 at the Frankfurt Motor Show which was based on the reliable mechanical platform of the
Kadett B. In addition to the slender forms and hidden headlamps, this car was also innovative because it was the first concept shown by a European car brand. Led by Erhard Schnell, the design team wanted to create a "design statement" and the audience reaction was so positive that the production model would reach the market three years later.
The GT Concept is intended to represent the pioneering spirit of Opel with a dynamic sports car highlighted by the signature red line that divides the body horizontally and is aimed to emphasize its proportions. The red color front tires draw inspiration from the advanced motorcycle Motoclub 500, produced by Opel in 1928. The vehicle also has a long hood, no trunk lid, the rear features centered dual exhaust and the GT badge bridges with the model of the 60s.
Among the most evident innovation in the Opel GT Concept are the large doors with integrated glasses, eliminating the usual transition between the body and the windows. The doors have electric drives, triggered by pressure sensors placed on each side, on the red trim.
Conventional mirrors are replaced in the Opel GT Concept by two cameras, one on each door, which capture images to the rear and show them on the two screens placed on the left side and right side of the dashboard. The windshield extends to the roof in a single glass surface, giving occupants the feel of traveling on a 'Targa' with a removable roof.
The headlights of the GT Concept reinforce the three-dimensional effect and are from the next generation IntelliLux LED matrix system that debuted in the new generation Astra model. This innovative technology allows always circular with the maximum without dazzling other drivers.
The GT Concept is equipped with a 1.0 turbo three-cylinder petrol front-mid-engine based on the powertrain used in the
ADAM,
Corsa and
Astra. With 145hp of output and maximum torque of 205Nm, the engine is combined with a six-speed sequential transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel. The GT Concept has rear-wheel drive, which is particularly appreciated by purist drivers and has a total weight below 1000 kg. The two-seater concept achieves acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and reaches a top speed of 215km/h.
