Peugeot 4008 Brings Modern SUV to Peugeot Range

Peugeot claims that SUVs are becoming more popular throughout the world. It says that they control 20% of the Russian car market and 10% of both the European and Chinese markets. That is the impetus behind its new, stylish 4008 SUV.

Power for the 4008 comes from one of four engines -- two petrol and two diesel. The 1.6l four-cylinder produces 85kW/116hp with a five-speed manual transmission. The 2.0l four-cylinder makes 113kW/150hp with either a five-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission. The diesel 1.6l HDi FAP makes 82kW/112hp with a six-speed manual transmission, and finally, the 1.8l HDi FAP produces 110kW/150hp with a six-speed manual transmission. These are the engines that will be available for Western Europe, and Peugeot said that other engines might also be available for other markets.

The four-wheel drive 4008 has a transmission that allows for two-wheel, front-wheel drive power or four-wheel drive. There is also a Lock mode that forces four-wheel drive power at all times and increases power sent to the rear wheels.

In a change from most cars that move into their new generation, the 4008 is actually smaller than the 4007. Overhangs have been reduced by 30cm, but the wheelbase and track remains the same.

The 4008 is meant to be modern. It has a floating front grill, LED running lights and headlights that Peugeot describes as "feline-like." To illustrate its off-road worthiness, the 4008 has large wheel openings and body sill extensions for protection.

The interior is equally modern. The 4008 has an interior covered in soft-touch materials, laquer black and chrome trim. The glass panorama roof is surrounded by LEDs for easier reading at night. It also gets a reverse camera, touch-screen navigation system and 18in alloy wheels.

The 4008 will debut in the second quarter of 2012 throughout Western Europe, Russia and China.

Peugoet has not yet announced prices for the 4008.
