President of Volkswagen North America Johnathan Browning as confirmed to Automotive News that the US will get a plug-in electric version of the next generation Golf very late next year as a 2014 model.
Volkswagen plans to follow the lead of the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt by rolling out the plug-in Golf regionally in the US. Most likely that will mean starting with New York and California and moving into the center of the country from there. It will go on sale in Europe at the same time.
Volkswagen has already been testing a fleet of 500 electric Golfs for a while, and 20 of those have been used by government organizations in California for testing purposes.
The new Golf is rumored to be publicly revealed at the Paris Auto Show at the end of September.
