After over a year of preparation, the Race2Recovery Rally Team is making final plans to take on the Dakar rally in January. The 11-man team is made up almost entirely of wounded British soldiers who will drive, maintain and support the cars from January 5 to January 20 over an 8,000k route in Peru, Argentina and Chile. and the Royal Foundation, a charity administered by Prince Harry.
The team has been training all year and made recent stops in Marrakech and Algeria to prepare for racing in the dunes.
"The main focus for this level of training was to get the guys reading advanced terrain changes and negotiating sand seas and razor dunes similar to the terrain they will find in South America. Much of the training focus was also on teaching a restrained, sympathetic and alert driving style to protect the vehicle and crew and ensure the appropriate mechanical sympathy to complete the Dakar," said Mark Cullum, one of the team's trainers, and the man who will drive their support truck.
The team is entering four four -based Wildcats plus the support vehicle. One of the team's drivers includes Captain Tony Harris, a below-the-knee amputee. A triple-amputee will be among the team's mechanics.
