General Motors has reached a new sales record in the Chinese market. The American company was for the sixth time in a row the most successful manufacturer in China with a total of 2,351,610 units sold.
The number revealed represents an increase in sales by 28.8 percent, with the number of sales being larger than in GM’s home market, in the USA.
GM overtook for the first time the mark of 2 million units sold in a single year in China. In fact the company was the first global automaker to do so. Shanghai GM became the first passenger car maker in China to sell one million vehicles annually, with 1,033,307 units sold.
Success in sales also came from SAIC-GM Wuling that grew 15.6 per cent to 1,226,860 units, conquering around 40 per cent of China’s commercial vehicle market. In its first ful year in business, GM’s light duty vehicle venture FAW-GM sold 88,224 trucks.
“GM kept pace with the needs of our customers by introducing 11 new and upgraded models that are leaders in their segments in design, technology and fuel economy,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “At the same time, we continued to expand our local presence to position GM for long-term growth in China.”
Chevrolet also registered a big sales growth over the last year. Dring the 12 months of 2010 the brand sold 63.4 percent more units than in 2009, a total of 543,709 vehicles. The Chevrolet Cruze was the most sold model, with sales of 187.737, followed by the New Sail small car, with sales of 125,652.
