Since the mid 70s, a redesigned Porsche 911 has meant a new Porsche Turbo, and since the 991-chassis 911 came out last year, a new turbo is imminent. The current rumor is that the new Porsche turbo will take a page from the just-announced M Performance diesels and use tri-turbo power.
Porsche's tri-turbo system is an amalgamation of a normal single turbo system and Porsche's current twin turbo setup. One small turbo is mounted close to the engine to provide low rpm boost. The other two turbos are setup like the current system feeding each bank of cylinders. It uses Porsche's existing 3.8 liter engine. The information on the turbo system was leaked in a German patent filing by Porsche.
In theory, the system will boost power, torque, give a broader powerband and increase fuel economy. Power will likely climb to about 525hp, up from 495hp.
Porsche has been testing the new 911 Turbo at the Nuerburgring, and it should be released within the next 12 months.
