Saab reborn from the ashes with the PhoeniX concept

Saab is showing its new design identity at the Geneva Motor Show. The PhoeniX concept represents the reborn of a brand and its new look at the future. Based on the next Saab 9-3 model, the concept introduces the ‘aeromotional’ design. This is the same visual suggestion of the aerodynamic design principles and passion for innovation that became the inspiration for the creators of Saab’s first car, the iconic Ursaab.

The PhoeniX is a hybrid vehicle that combines an efficient, 1.6-liter turbo engine with electric rear wheel drive technology. The compact, all-aluminum gasoline engine has a power output of 200 hp and is fitted with variable valve timing and lift control, as well as start/stop functionality, minimal parasitic losses and a fuel cut-off function. It also features a stainless steel tank that is lighter and less expensive than a conventional plastic design.

As for the electric motor/generator, it powers the rear wheels and develops 34 hp. The eXWD system is powered by a small battery pack. The system also uses regenerative braking, using the energy to sustain the battery’s charge.

The hybrid system has been combined with a six-speed manual transmission. The result is a combined fuel consumption of 5.0l/100km and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km.

The PhoeniX concept can be driven in three different modes. It includes a default Eco mode, which offers the best consumption and CO2 levels, a Sport mode and Traction mode.

Saab describes the design of the PhoeniX cabin as a teardrop that “appears to erupt from the center of the muscular bodywork.” The teardrop style is also used at the back resembling and reminding the Ursaab, while the kamm tail echoes Saab’s first coupé, the Sonett.

At the front the PhoeniX shows off a stretched interpretation of Saab’s signature three-port grille. Now the central wing is dominant and the LED headlamps seem almost invisible. According to the brand the new grille and hood forms are part of the design cues that should likely be adopted in future Saab models.
