Cupra are being split into two cars. The standard Leon Cupra has 262hp (265ps), and the top-spec Cupra 280 has 276hp (280ps).

Power comes from a 2.0 TSI engine in both versions, and they are available with either a manual or DSG gearbox and in three-door or five-door configuration. Regardless of trim, the Cupra gets an electronically locking differential, variable ratio power steering and the latest version of Seat’s Dynamic Chassis Control system. It is also 55kg lighter than the previous generation.

“With the new Leon Cupra, the Seat brand is once more taking a major leap forward. The Cupra is a refined, high-performance car that combines its expressive dynamics with relaxed long-distance comfort and a compelling, high-quality feel,” said Jürgen Stackmann, Seat CEO.

The Cupra 280 model will get to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds with the optional DSG or 5.8 seconds with the manual. The standard Cupra takes slightly longer to reach 100km/h with 5.8 seconds for the DSG and 5.9 seconds for the manual.

Fuel economy is the same for both models at 6.4l/100km for the DSG and 6.6l/100km for the manual. Both cars have an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.

Seat’s Cupra Drive Profile allows drivers to tune the car’s driving to their needs. The stability control system has three settings – On, traction control off and completely off. Drivers can also select between Comfort and Sport modes for the throttle settings.

In terms of changes to styling, the front end gets a new bumper with larger air intakes and full-LED headlights, and the rear has a lower bumper with a fake diffuser and dual exhaust pipes.

The interior gets standard gray Alcantara seats with white stitching or black leather seats and Seat’s Media System Plus with a 5.8in color touchscreen. There are also optional sport seats.

The more powerful Cupra 280 also gets 19in wheels, a rear spoiler, black mirror covers and either gloss black or chrome interior trim.

Seat will announce the pricing and release date later.
