has been teasing its new European-focused Civic TourerCivic Tourer 1.8 i-VTECHonda Civic Tourer 1.8 i-...Japan, 2014 > present for several months, but it is finally ready and will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will go on sale in early 2014.

Honda is touting the new Civic Tourers European design. While the Civic is a global car, the version sold in Europe in already unique, and Honda has designed and engineered the Tourer specifically for the European market. It will be built in the UK.

Forward of the B-pillar, the new car is identical to the basic Civic, but behind it, Honda has done a lot of work. The roof flows all the way to the rear in a gentle arc, and the sides are punctuated by a complex series of windows. The rear door windows are 17mm higher and have a five-side irregular shape, and the window for the cargo area is made of an arc on top and two sharp lines on the bottom. At the rear, the cargo load point has been lowered 137mm. It gives the car a complicated, almost old Citroën look.

The added room gives the car 624 liters of rear cargo room with the rear seats up and the tonneau cover closed or 1,668 liters with the rear seats down and tonneau cover open. Honda claims that the interior will hold two mountain bikes or three full-size suitcases. There is also further under floor storage. The Tourer has 147 liters more storage with the seats up and 290 liters more with the seats down.

"I am very proud of the Civic Tourer's sporty, sleek and dynamic proportions, which somewhat hide the car's true functionality and versatility,” said Adrian Killham, project leader.

The Civic Tourer will be available with either the 1.6-liter i-DTECCivic Tourer 1.6 i-DTECHonda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-...Japan, 2014 > present diesel or 1.8-liter i-VTEC petrol engine. Both will be available with either a manual or automatic transmission.

The Tourer will also introduce Honda’s new Adaptive Damper System on the rear suspension. It offers comfort, normal and dynamic modes that allows drivers to soften the suspension when cruising or tighten it during sporty driving.

“By introducing the technology in this format, we expect many customers will be able to experience the benefits of this advanced system,” said Killham.

Honda has not announced pricing for the Tourer yet.
